At 10.00am Thursday 17 July, Sackville School in East Grinstead and Hazelwick in Crawley became the first schools in the UK to take on the concept of interactive web-racing. For an hour, up to three age groups from each school raced each other on bikes 'live' via internet link up. This is trail blazing stuff as it is the first time anything like this has been staged anywhere in the world let alone the UK and it has the potential to help revolutionize childrens' fitness, by getting youngsters excited about taking more exercise. Each school was supplied with two children's exercise bikes hooked up to the internet, which will allow them to race on a variety of virtual reality tracks, including across the moon, over deserts and in the snow. Not only are all competitors seen on screen they are also heard, just as if they were really there, 'out on the open road '. The teams racing took place their own school gyms with other pupils giving their support, the races being projected onto a big wall screen at each venue. Three year groups participated (yr groups 8/9/10). One of the merits of the day was to encourage youngsters to take more exercise. Motivation is the key word and software technology that taps into youth culture, allowing pupils to race against others when riding an exercise bike or, indeed, when using other fitness machines, such as treadmills or rowers, offers motivation in spades! There is even potential to race against schools in other countries. The exercise bikes are being donated to the schools by Instyle Fitness based in East Grinstead.
